Book review: Keystone (a crossbreed novel) by Dannika Dark

Okay, this is the audiobook I finished over the weekend. I really enjoyed it and I have heard nobody talking about it, so I thought I would give it a review.

I will start this by saying that this is the first book I have read by this author, and I am a big fan of the way she writes her characters in everything I have read. Keystone is not an exception to this as she builds up the characters nicely.

The general story is that Raven is a crossbreed of a mage and a vampire which has never been done and is considered being impossible. She wasn’t turned long ago, so it is not like she is used to immortality at all. She spends her time defending the mortals who don’t even know she exists, and this is how we are introduced to her. A group has been trying to find her based on the reputation she has left behind, and they finally track her down. As she gets to know the group, she realises they are all different breeds who would not normally be friends. At first she is sceptical, but then she decides she feels at home within their walls. This doesn’t last long as everything falls apart and she finds herself exiled from the group. Undeterred, she continues to help them and even comes to their defence in the end. By the ending, they have all realised they trust each other and they accept her as a member.

As this is book 1, the unanswered questions may receive an answer in later books but they still annoyed me slightly. The biggest one was about her creator, who she will not talk about and refuses to answer questions. By the end of the book, you are wondering whether she has one creator or two.

It also leaves the history of the group as a mystery, although they consider themselves to be a family. I would like to know more about this, and exactly how they got the wealth they seem to possess.

Christian is also a mystery, but it would have been nicer if his motivations were actually explained. You learn some things, but not enough about him or even the rest of the cast.

However, because this is book 1 these are things I can look over. I hope to be able to find some other books in this series because I really enjoyed reading about the distinct characters. These are ones I would definitely consider buying in the future. Like I said, the characters are very well written and you almost feel you are there as the story is taking place. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes fantasy or the supernatural, as it is brilliant with the twists and turns. Overall, I would give this 4/5.
