FFfAW: Fitting in

Enid looked out of the kitchen window and heaved a sigh. She was stirring the soup on the stove almost automatically. “This used to be a nice quiet neighbourhood, you know.”

Stan, who was sitting at the kitchen table reading the paper, looked up briefly. “What are you talking about?”

“That… That woman who moved in does like to make herself stick out. We are no longer this nice, quiet, and subdued neighbourhood. Now it seems we are the home of the clashing colours. It makes us look like we need attention, and we certainly don’t want that.”

“For the love of… Enid, what are you on about now?”

“Blue. She has painted that door bright blue and it clashes with everything. It shouldn’t be allowed.”

Stan turned over the page and carried on reading. “It is only paint, love. You sound like such a snob carrying on like that.”

  1. Good one Angie, I did remind me of how picky we can get over what other people do to their houses…though I do accept that as a neighbour we do have to look at it. I remember once there was a great upset in this town when a resident had the temerity to place their clothes line on their front lawn….

      1. Or homeschooling groups, mommy groups, school ‘clicks’…but particularly small towns and villages can be prickly to outsiders. Take heart, write it down, get it out, move on 😉

  2. Love this story! I can so related. Enid reminds me of my neighbor who I’ve affectionately dubbed “the desperate housewife.” 🙂 Her husband is also a really nice man.
Thanks for making me smile today!
